Walla Crag, Lake District

Welcome to our unofficial series: Very Slow Wainwrights! 😂 We started ticking off our first two Wainwrights last year, and now—finally—we’ve done our third. 🎉 And no, it’s not a race!

This time, we tackled Walla Crag in the Lake District, and while it was a beautiful adventure, it definitely pushed us more than our usual family walks. If you’re used to accessible trails or flat paths, this one’s a bit of a change—but still very doable with the right mindset (and snacks!).

What to Expect on the Trail

Unlike our usual picks, Walla Crag isn’t fully accessible—it’s a bit of a challenge! For us casual hikers, there was a lot more climbing and scrambling, especially for Yusuf, who absolutely thrived on the rockier parts.

For adults, the path is mostly manageable walking with a few rocky scrambles. But if you’re unfamiliar, scrambling means using both hands and feet to climb up or over steeper sections—nothing too technical, just adventurous fun!

That said… I definitely had a few heart-in-throat moments watching Yusuf bounce around near the edges! 🫣 He’s got endless energy and a fearless approach, while I was just trying to keep up. But once we made it to the top, the views were absolutely worth it 😍

Route Details

We followed the route from @thelittlesandthelakes, using their OS map (thank you again—we’d be totally lost without you!). If you’re planning to go, we’d highly recommend using their suggested ascent route. It makes the climb easier and more enjoyable, especially with kids in tow.

Parking and Practical Tips

We parked at Great Wood car park, a great base for Walla Crag and other nearby walks. If you’re planning a visit, it’s best to go on a cooler day or outside the school holidays for easier parking and quieter trails.

Oh—and we experienced all four seasons in one day, so if you’re hiking in spring, pack it all:
🧢 Cap
🧤 Gloves
🧥 Layers
🕶 Sunglasses

You’ll probably use every single one of them!

Final Thoughts

Walla Crag isn’t your typical accessible trail, but it’s a brilliant introduction to family scrambling and a gorgeous Wainwright to tick off your list. If your little ones love climbing and exploring, this is a trail they’ll remember.

And if you’re also on a slow-and-steady Wainwright journey, you’re in good company. We’re in no rush—just enjoying the journey, one trail at a time 🥾💚
