Dovestone Reservoir: An Accessible Walk in the Peak District ♿️

After a few years away, we finally returned to Dovestone Reservoir, and it was just as stunning as we remembered. This time, we kept things super relaxed—just a short wander and a sunny picnic kind of day ☀️

If you’re looking for a walk that balances scenery, accessibility, and family-friendliness, this spot in the Peak District is well worth a visit.

A Scenic Stroll for All Abilities

We only walked about a quarter of the full loop this time, but even that was beautiful. The full circular route is under 2.5 miles, making it doable for families with young children or those who prefer a shorter stroll.

Some sections are fully accessible, with smooth tarmac paths—great for wheelchairs and standard buggies. However, other parts can get steep or rocky, so if you’re aiming for the full loop, you’ll want a sturdy buggy or an all-terrain wheelchair.

It’s definitely possible to tailor your walk based on energy levels, weather, or accessibility needs—and we love that flexibility!

Great for Kids (and Picnics!)

Dovestone is ideal for slow travel days:

  • There are plenty of picnic spots dotted along the route.
  • In dry weather, the water’s edge is accessible—perfect for skipping stones (but not swimming).
  • You’re surrounded by peaceful views, gentle hills, and wildlife—making it a sensory-friendly and calming outdoor experience.

Parking and Facilities

The main car park fills up very quickly on sunny days, so arrive early if you can. If it’s full:

  • Try Binn Green car park just a short drive up the road (it’s small, so be quick!).
  • There’s also some street parking, or you can park in the village and walk around 30 minutes to the reservoir.

🧻 Toilets are available in the main car park, but be aware that other facilities are limited once you’re out on the trail.

Final Thoughts

Dovestone Reservoir is one of those places that invites you to slow down and soak up the views. Whether you do the full loop or just enjoy a picnic and a short walk, it’s a family-friendly, semi-accessible gem in the Peak District. Great for days when you want to keep things simple and let the kids explore without a tight schedule.
